This study used a cross-sectional, quantitative design. A written survey was
administered to 228 African American women, recruited via convenience sampling from
a community setting (a local shopping center), to examine their oral health practices,
status, knowledge, and perceptions. Demographic data were also collected. The questions
about their oral health perceptions were based on the five empirically tested constructs of
the HBM: perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits, perceived
barriers, and perceived self-efficacy. Data were analyzed using RxC contingency tables,
Pearson’s chi-square test, multiple logistic regression, and one-way analysis of variance
(ANOVA) using SPSS software
