“Strange that it should come that very night to remind her of the promise to her mother, her promise to keep the home together as long as she could” (156). This quote from “Eveline” a short story by James Joyce shows that Eveline leaving her home wasn’t the best solution to solve the family situation. The situation in the family was too much. Almost everyday, Eveline was beaten or abused by her father. Even when she earned money from her supporting job, the father always took the money away from her, and wanted to make Eveline unhappy. When Eveline was a little girl, she had a wonderful family. She used to go to the field to play together with her younger brothers and friends; Eveline also remembered when she was little, her father made her laugh by putting on the mothers’ hat or bonnet just to make her laugh but when her mother died, the family became worse than ever. This was why Eveline considered leaving home when she met Frank, who was a good man. However, Eveline was confused about leaving home, and starting a new life with Frank. She didn’t know if that was the best thing to do. Eveline’s situation in experiencing her father’s violence was too much, but the promise she kept to her mother pulled her back. Also, Eveline decided to stay back home because family comes first. Also she was unsure about whether she loved Frank or not. After all, Eveline had to decide between her experience with her father, taking care of the brother and sister, her job, and the love of her life, Frank. She decided to stay back home. This is because she remembered the promise to her mother. Eveline’s situation influenced her to make the right decision to stay back home.

Eveline was correct about staying back home because she promised her mother to keep the family home together. That promise changed her decision about leaving the house because Eveline remembered that she had to take care of the family as she had promised. The promise Eveline made to her mother made Eveline rethink before she made a decision. The promise meant that running away from home wasn’t the best solution. That day she was sitting down, next to the window when she decided to leave but the promise to her mother in keeping the family together captured her mind. She had promised to make sure that her young brother and sister that were in her care went to school and ate their meals properly. That was when Eveline understood that leaving home couldn’t solve the problem but rather keeping the home together as she promised her mother was the right thing to do. It is logical that Eveline was unsure about leaving the house. If anything went wrong with her family, she would blame herself or feel guilty. “Her father was becoming old lately, she noticed; he would miss her” (156). Eveline was in fear because her father was getting so old that he couldn’t take care of himself. Almost everyday Eveline ran to the market to buy something to eat, made sure that it was cooked, and cleaned the house. Eveline’s main concern was who was going to take care of the father, and of the younger siblings if anything happens.

Eveline’s decision to stay home made sense because she wasn’t in love with Frank. Eveline was just using Frank to get away or cover the unhappiness that was shown on her face. “Frank would take her in his arms, fold her in his arms. He would save her” (156). Eveline wanted someone who could protect her, give her happiness so she could forget every situation that went on between her and her father. Also, Eveline wasn’t in love with Frank because the feelings of insecurity that Frank wasn’t the right man for her kept coming. If Eveline was in love with Frank, the promise to the mother wouldn’t have stopped her from leaving her home. Also, Eveline still had a fear that the father might beat her if he found out about Frank.

Some people may not understand Eveline’s reasons for staying back or think that Eveline made the wrong decision by sacrificing the love for Frank to satisfy the mother’s promise and stay back home with a violent father who would continue abusing her. Also, some believe that Eveline would have had a better life if she would have left with Frank. However, there was no sign showing that Frank would be a better man or husband for Eveline or that leaving home was going to be the best thing for her. Frank and Eveline never discussed how their relationship would be if she had left with him and they had gotten married. Eveline was right in not leaving because she was unsure about Frank, and she had a promise to keep.

Eveline’s situation influenced her to make the right decision to stay back home and not to leave with Frank. Eveline realized the importance of what family means, and running away from home wasn’t the best way to solve family issues. Also, Eveline’s main reason to stay back home was to see the family back the way it was when their mother was alive. This entire situation influenced Eveline in deciding wisely to stay home and keep the family together again. Eveline later understood that no matter what the situation in the family is, keeping the family together and not running away from the problems is the best because family will always come first.
