Brokenness and Disruptive Coloration

Vision --- this applies to nearly all visual systems --- emphasizes edges. Long straight or slightly curved edges, such as the outlines of an animal, are particularly noticeable to the eye and the brain. One of the key to being hidden is to break up the edges; this makes it more difficult for the visual system to discover the outline of an animal (see Figure 10.7).
