L You will hear people talking in eight different
situations. For questions 1-8, choose the best
answer a, b, or c.
1 Listen to a man talking to a shop assistant.
Why is he grateful to her?
a. He’s going to get his money back.
b. She will let him exchange the shirt.
c. He can have store credit for a month.
Man But last time you gave me a refund
without any fuss at all.
Woman Well, this shirt was on sale.
Man Well, can’t I see if there’s something
else I want? Just this once?
Woman I shouldn’t really. I can’t even give you
store credit, but I’ve seen how often
you’re in here each month. Look, I’ll
make an exception this time. Hurry up
and choose something before the
manager gets back from lunch.
Man Thanks so much.
2 Listen to this man and woman talking. What
does he think about shopping on the Internet?
a. He does all his shopping on the Internet.
b. It’s convenient for some items.
c. It’s good shopping on the Internet.
Man It’s so easy. No crowds, no lines to
wait in and no rude shop assistants!
Just you at your desk. It’s great!
Woman Do you buy a lot of things online?
Man Well, not clothes, I prefer to try them
on, of course, and certainly not shoes.
But books and CDs - stuff like that -
yes, always.
Woman What a laugh! Imagine doing the
shopping in your pajamas!
3 Listen to this conversation between two
people designing a TV advertisement. The
woman thinks the man’s ideas are
a. exciting
b. rather dull
c. childish
Man I’ve got it! This is perfect! So, we have
the little girl ask her mother for another
glass of juice ... and then a voice says:
“The perfect juice for your children.”
Woman Not another commercial with a child!
You always come up with that idea.
Look, we need to give the product a
personality, you know: lively, fun,
exciting. No more boring scenes in a
kitchen!
Man Don’t forget it’s the mothers who
actually decide to buy the juice ...
Woman Fine! But let’s come up with something
more exciting.
4 A couple are talking about a coat the man
has just bought. Why does the woman
begin to feel a little less upset?
a. The man recently found a better job.
b. The coat really suits the man.
c. There is a special payment plan.
Woman One hundred twenty dollars! Are you
mad? I’m thrilled about your new job
and all, but there’s no way we can
afford that much this month.
Man Look, it was in the sale – half price. I
couldn’t resist it, it’s pure wool.
Besides, it’ll only cost us $10 a month.
Woman What are you talking about?
Man That’s right. Just $10 a month. I’m
going to pay for it in installments –
interest free!
Woman Oh well, I suppose that’s not so bad
after all, spread out over a year ... and
I have to say it does look very good on
you. It’ll go perfectly with those pants I
gave you for your birthday ... (fade)
5 Listen to this conversation. How does the
man feel?
a. amused
b. irritated
c. surprised
Clerk Look, there’s no need to take that tone
with me, I’m just doing my job.
Man But I’ve got the receipt right here. Look,
the 12th – that was just yesterday.
Clerk I can see it perfectly well, but it’s still not
our responsibility. You’ll have to send it
back to the manufacturers.
Man Send it back?! That’ll take weeks.
Clerk Usually about six, from what I’ve heard.
Man This is a joke! I can’t believe this. I’m
surprised you’re still in business with
service like this.
6 This man and woman are driving in the
countryside. How does the man feel?
a. nervous
b. annoyed
c. amazed
Man Oh now, look at that! That sort of thing
really gets on my nerves!
Woman What are you talking about?
Man That billboard over there. I can’t stand
that!
Woman What on earth are you talking about?
Man Look, here we are – it’s a lovely day.
We’re driving through this beautiful
countryside and then suddenly, we are
forced to look at some enormous
advertisement for the latest product
from some company!
Woman Actually, I’d never really thought about
it before, but now that you mention it, it
is pretty ugly.
Man They completely destroy the scenery!
It’s amazing how many you see, no
matter where you go!
7 A man and woman are talking about the
attitude of some people. What kind of
people are they referring to?
a. shop assistants
b. customers
c. store owners
Man ... and the way some of them come in
here. You’d think they owned the store!
Woman And of course any problem they have
is always our fault.
Man What about the ones who think we are
all completely stupid? “I’d like to see
the manager, please.” That’s the first
thing that comes out of their mouths. It
doesn’t even occur to them that I might
be the manager!
Woman Still, they’re not all like that, luckily.
You do get some really friendly ones
sometimes – like that guy the other
day who ... [fade]
8 Listen to this conversation in a department
store. The woman is
a. impatient
b. uncooperative
c. guilty
Man Miss? Excuse me, miss. I’m sorry to
ask you this, but would you mind
opening your bag?
Woman I beg your pardon?
Man I said would you mind opening your
shopping bag?
Woman I certainly do mind!
Man Miss, the store does have the right to
search your bags.
Woman Do I look like a thief, young man? Are
you calling me a shoplifter! Is that what
you’re saying? You’re accusing me of
stealing from your store. Is that right?
Man Miss, just calm down. I am not
accusing you of anything. I just want
you to open the bag.
Woman Leave me alone! This is outrageous ...

K You will hear part of a radio interview with
Steve, a public employee. For questions 1-10,
complete the information with a word, a number
or a short phrase.
Anna So Steve, for those listeners who have just
joined us, you are a public service
employee ...
Steve Yes, that’s right. My “boss”, you could say,
is the government. I suppose my official
title is a public, or civil, servant.
Anna I believe that you work in a bank? Are you
a bank teller?
Steve No! Nothing like that. To be honest, I don’t
think I’d be cut out for a desk job! No, my
job is quite different. I do work for a bank –
but I don’t actually work in the bank itself.
Anna Where do you work then?
Steve I work at the mint.
Anna The mint? Oh, I had no idea of that.
Perhaps some of our listeners may not
know exactly what a mint is, and by the
way, for our younger listeners, mint is
spelled M-I-N-T.
Steve The mint is the place where all the money
is made, you know, where all the coins are
formed and paper money is printed. It is
also the place where money is stored.
Anna And what do you do there?
Steve I am one of the head security officers.
Anna What does your job involve, Steve?
Steve Well, there are four different areas I’m
responsible for. First, the protection of the
mint area itself, in other words, making
sure the grounds are secure. Secondly,
the storage of the money. Thirdly, the
transportation of the money around the
country. And finally, I’m responsible for the
hiring and training of new security staff.
Anna That certainly sounds like a tremendous
responsibility. Would you say that one area
is more stressful than the others?
Steve All four are pretty stressful, but perhaps the
one that is most worrying is the
transportation of the money.
Anna Really? Why?
Steve Well, let’s imagine there’s a huge sum of
money that needs to be collected from the
airport and brought to the mint. Of course,
we use a high security, bullet-proof vehicle
and several unmarked security cars, but
most important of all is that no one must
know the route we are going to take – not
even the police. That’s my job. Although
I’ve planned a route – in my head that is,
not on paper – if I notice anything
suspicious as we are driving, I change the
route on the spot.
Anna Suspicious? Such as?
Steve Well, let’s say I notice a car on the side of
the road and a couple of guys changing a
tire. This might seem very innocent, but
these men could also be part of an
organized robbery, you never know.
Occasionally I get an uneasy or strange
feeling about this sort of thing, so I change
the route while the journey itself is in
progress.
Anna I see! What qualities would you say are the
most important for this type of job?
Steve You must be extremely observant.
Especially, as I explained, during the
process of transporting the money. You
have to keep your eyes open and observe
everything! If you’re not observant, then you
could lose the money, your life ... well, I’d
hate to imagine that scenario.
Anna Indeed. And in terms of guarding the
money while it’s at the mint ... (fade)

Speaker 1
It was just devastating. I mean, one day we were

world had been turned upside-down. I’d heard of
flash floods, but I’d never actually experienced
one. We had hardly any warning whatsoever. I
think they might have mentioned something
about rain on the news that morning, but no one
expected to actually be homeless by the evening.
Nearly every house in the village was flooded.
It’s going to take years to repair all the damage. I
can’t say enough about the army, though. How
on earth they managed to build that sand bank
so quickly, I have no idea. If they hadn’t, some of
us might not be here today. I can only hope we’re
a little more prepared if it ever happens again.
Speaker 2
We were one of the lucky ones, but my cousin’s
house was burned to the ground. They lost
everything, just like most of the farmers in the area.
The drought has been going on for months, so the
river bed was completely dry. In the end they had to
use planes to get the flames under control. It’ll be
years before the forest returns to normal. There are
rumors about how it started, but nothing’s bee
