Although Patrick is viewed more in a negative way we also sympathise for him. This is because his wife left him with nothing to go on with and she left her children without a mother. You sympathise for Patrick as the role of a mother isn’t something that is expected from the father/male and therefore you feel. Grace is also viewed with digression as she leaves her children. This can be seen as her abandoning her motherly duties; which include caring for the children and raising them. This is the only reason that Grace isn’t liked to an extent nor sympathised with so highly. We have this view as we know what is expected of a mother and recognise woman (in general) as the more caring and considerate gender. This view makes it more unacceptable for Grace to leave her children and therefore the readers perception of Grace changes. Overall the reasons for my reading of “The Lottery” include living in the 21st century and the implications and changes of this time period.
