Results from adding fat to diets for early
weaned pigs Ke., 21 d of age) are inconsistent,
and the fat source chosen seems to have an effect.
In the present experiments, soybean oil and
coconut oil were superior to fat sources such as
tallow and lard, but addition of lecithin to tallow
improved nutrient digestibilities to levels more
comparable to those for diets with soybean oil and
coconut oil without emulsifiers. Furthermore, diet
costs were reduced by using emulsified animal fat
compared with soybean oil or coconut oil.
However, no fat source improved growth performance
for the first 7 to 14 d postweaning compared
with a control diet with no added fa
