An embedded array of FBGs exhibited its feasibility to be used at orthopaedic joints interfaces for pressure mapping and the measurement of contact forces and stresses. It is necessary for those involved in prostheses research and biomechanics studies to understand the contact area and contact stress at Orthopaedic joints as well as the alignment of the joint interface (i.e., tibiofemoral interface). Measurements of contact area, contact force and stress distribution in the tibiofemoral joint have been made using commercially available stress-sensitive films such as I-Scan and Fujifilm [40–43]. However, the biomechanics of knee joint might be altered after the insertion of these films at the articulating surfaces.
