Renaissance (rebirth), the return of humanism and secularism during the 14th, 15th, 16th
centuries as influenced by the interest on the Classics
• This social phenomenon contrasts with the religious pursuit in the Middle Ages
i.e. secular vs spiritual.
• During the Middle Ages, beliefs about God’s omnipotence, the original sin, God’s punishment,
the king’s divine right etc. could discourage a person from having an active role in solving their
life problem e.g. injustice by making him more submissive to accept his fate. This could be a
cause why people in the Middle Ages wished for happiness in the next world rather than trying to
overcome their problems in the present world.
• Christian morality concentrates on the belief about Jesus Christ who came to redeem human sin.
As for the concept of salvation, it is necessary for people to discard their arrogance and accept
that they are sinful.
• Humanism, on contrary, suggests that:
1. Dignity of man as the most excellent of all God’s creatures. Even they are below the
angels, man is the only earthly creature who can obtain knowledge of God
2. Ability of man to master his fate and live happily in the world, with intelligence man
can understand and control nature by his own will, not to depend only on God's will
