Take a look inside China's suicide-proof holding cells for corrupt officials
Ever wonder where all those disappearing officials go to while under police investigation? Possibly, they are admitted to suicide-proof chambers, like this one shown in recent photos posted online by Chinese news outlets. The Ziyang Residence, located somewhere in Sichuan, features strange, almost hotel-like accommodations and is currently in the final stages of renovation.
According to Sina, 11 officials already have their rooms booked. Let's see what they can expect from their stay.
From the outside, one would never guess the building contained holding cells for the corrupt. Take a step inside and it becomes more obvious with a bizarre lobby populated by guards adorned in business suits waiting behind a cushy desk to receive criminal cadres.
Behind the desk, the guards keep watch via security cameras in each room.
The accommodations are notable for their soft surfaces and complete lack of corners. The building is designed to be "suicide-proof," as Xi Jinping's anti-corruption campaign has brought on what is known as an "official suicide wave" since many CCP members prefer death over disgrace, believing that their families will be able to keep their illegal gains and remain unmolested by the law if they simply kill themselves.
Special concern is given to the food served in the cafeteria, as it must be deboned so that prisoners cannot carve makeshift knives from the bone. Also, chopsticks are unavailable. Instead, prisoners are given soft spoons to eat with.
