Stock seed production
Foundation seed of open-pollinated cultivars is maintained by selfing single plant selections which are grown in isolation.
After harvesting the seed separately from each selected plant, the individual seed lots are progeny-tested and the approved material is bulked for further multiplication.
Commercial seeds should be treated with a registered protectant such as Captan and Thiram before sealing them into cans, bags, or packets. Seeds should be stored in hermetically sealed containers at 6.5% moisture content, and no greater than 10% moisture.
Under favorable storage conditions, seeds should last 4 years. To be salable, germination of the seed lot must be at least 70%.
