Howard Schultz: Blending Leadership Approaches at Starbucks
Howard Schultz always dreamed of being part of a company that his dad never got the opportunity to work for. Growing up in poverty in the Bayview Housing Projects of Brooklyn, New York would impact Schultz not only in his youth, but as he grew older to become one of the most successful food industry leaders of today. When Schultz was seven years old, his father was injured on the job as a delivery driver when he slipped on ice (George, 2015). The injury caused his father to lose his job, as well as any benefits he had. At the same time, his mother was pregnant and unable to work. According to Boardroom Insiders, Inc. (2015), Schultz held many jobs as a young boy, including delivering newspapers and working in the city’s garment district. He would later become the first in his family to attend college and graduated with a degree in communication from Norther Michigan University
