1. Remain calm when interacting with the family.
2. Use active listening skills to help James and his mother talk about their fears.
3. Assure James and his mother that their fears and emotions are very normal.
4. Encourage family to ask any questions at any time.
5. Refer to social worker.
6. Phone family at intervals to assure them of continuing support.
7. Teach simple progressive muscle tensing and relaxing exercises.
8. Teach family about LS.
9. Teach family about each medication as it is added to regimen. Provide written information. Make sure that information includes purpose and
usual side effects. Be sure to emphasize anything special about its administration, such as ‘‘take with a snack.’’
