We upgraded our Deluxe City view room for a river view with balcony in the Shangri-La Wing for about 900 Thai bhat more nightly. It was definitely worth the extra expense as we were in Bangkok for the Loy Krathong festival. The festival is along the Chao Phraya River and includes lighted boats on the river, fireworks, and candlelit lanterns floating in the sky and in the river. The view from our corner room was great, we could see all of the activities and even some of the hotel show that was in the pool area. The room had a sofa built in alcove with a bay window on the wall opposite the bed, the sliding patio door adjacent to the bed, and a large bay window in the bathroom above the tub. The bathroom was large with a double sink vanity and a glass enclosed stall shower. There were complimentary bottles of drinking water and topical fruits daily. The hotel also offered a free boat shuttle to and from the River City shopping center but it is only avaiable on a schedule. The Shangri-La Hotel was an excellent choice and one block to the Sky Train (Saphan Taksin station) which is the public transit system above ground is fast, convenient and inexpensive (34 to 42 Thai baht/person/one-way). The streets in Bangkok are so congested by car at peak traffic hours that it is quicker to walk, take the sky train or Chao Praya Express boats. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Shangri-La Bangkok, definitely a 5 star in the top 3 great hotels in Bangkok.
