In the Salamanca Statement (1994) published by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, one of the ways of ensuring that children with learning disabilities (LD) were treated equally was the promotion of inclusive education. However, only relatively recently has the government implemented educational packages to target MHD in schools. In 2009 the Department for Children, Schools and Families launched a 3-year programme called Targeted Mental Health in Schools (TaMHS). The aim was to enable schools to deliver a holistic, whole school approach to promote children’s mental well-being and increase knowledge about MHD and LD (TaMHS, 2008).
