In summary, an efficient sodium silicate solid basic catalyst was synthesized by using rice husk and NaOH solution. The prepared catalysts were used in transesterification reaction of many kinds of oils to biodiesel. Under optimized reaction conditions, FAME yield reached 97% after only 30 min at 65 °C and 94% after 150 min (2.5 h) at room temperature. This sodium silicate can be reused for four times with excellent activity without regeneration or treatment. The obtained biodiesel product after purification and treatment process by cation-exchange resin shows high quality fuel properties according to ASTM D6751 and EN 14214 standards indicating that the low-cost rice husk-derived sodium silicate catalysts has high catalytic performance and could be used for biodiesel production in industrial scale.
