Such interactions require prior scheduling which can be challenging if teams are
working in different time zones. Further, in a virtual environment, some of the informal
communication that occurs face-to-face in passing is missing (Gavidia et al., 2004).
Teams that work together in the same location may quickly resolve an issue in the
hallway that would take days to resolve if working in an asynchronous online
environment. In the virtual environment, lack of non-verbal communication, coupled
commonly with a delay in communication, creates an environment where uncertainty
is commonplace. This uncertainty can lead to difficulties in maintaining motivation
and engagement levels in a virtual environment (Lockwood, 2010).
