S. obliquus and Scenedesmus acutus strains were obtained from the
Canadian Phycological Culture Center in Waterloo, Canada (CPCC 5
and CPCC 10). The Chlorella vulgaris and C. protothecoides strains were
obtained from the University of Texas at Austin algae collection (UTEX
2714 and UTEX 255). All cultures were kept in heat sterilized (121 °C,
15 min) Bold's basal medium (BBM), with an adjusted pH of 6.8 [21].
For C. protothecoides, 1 g L−1 of soy protein peptone (Sigma-Aldrich)
was added to the medium (BBMP).
