Rufus McGarrigle Wainwright comes from a musical family. His mother Kate McGarrigle and his father Loudon Wainwright III were celebrated folk singers.
Having learned how to play piano when he was a little boy, Wainwright went on to spend his teenage years performing and touring alongside his family in the McGarrigle Sisters and Family band.
At the age of 25, Rufus released his debut album, which promptly won over music critics far and wide for its wholesome fusion of orchestral arrangements and wildly original, thought-provoking songwriting. Over the years that followed, Wainwright was involved in several projects including seven LPs, three EPs, three live albums, numerous soundtracks and much more.
With his vast and diverse experience, it seems appropriate for Wainwright to put together a best-of album to reflect his career. Vibrate is a collection of 18 stunning tracks, plus 16 additional songs and one new track on the deluxe version.
The selections on Vibrate cover early material such as “April Fools” and “Oh What a World” and music from the movie soundtracks for Shrek and Out of the Game.
The only new track, “Me and Liza,” which is also the deluxe album’s first single, brilliantly shows the singer’s witty and whimsical side. Other highlights include the politically jaded “Going to a Town,” the poem he wrote for his father called “Dinner at Eight,” and a cover of The Beatles’ song “Across the Universe.”
If you want to learn about the music of Rufus Wainwright, Vibrate is a good place to start. If you’re already a fan, the deluxe version will round off your collection nicely.
