Rows 3, 4, and 5 provide information on the frequency of family CEOs. We find among family firms that 45.0 percent of the CEOs are family members and 55.0 percent are outsiders or hired hands. Of the 45.0 percent family CEOs, we note 14.5 percent are founders and 30.4 percent are founder descendants. Row 9 shows that family firms, on average,are smaller than nonfamily firms but still of substantial size with mean total assets of $9.617 billion relative to $14.999 billion for nonfamily firms.
