The Natural Approach (NA) is a method of language teaching developed by Stephen Krashen and Tracy Terrell in late 1970s and early 1980s and this method was adjusted from other methods, e.g. Total Physical Response (TPR) that activity of this method use mime and gesture.
There are 5 simple principles of the natural approach that it is consistent with the hypothesis.
1. The Acquisition-Learning Hypothesis
There are two ways of learning in second languages.
- Acquisition is the natural learning process that the learners learn the language from communication and adoption.
- Learning is the unnatural learning process that the learners learn to know about the rules of language.
So, learning in second language should learn from acquisition that it like the learners utilize in acquiring their first language.
