One setting that has only recently been utilised
as a location for physical activity interventions is
the local community church. One advantage of the
church as a setting is that it can involve a holistic
approach to health behaviour change, in which
physical, mental and spiritual health are addressed.
Spiritual health refers to an inherent human quality
involving a belief in something greater than
the self, and a faith that positively affirms life.3
Another benefit of the church setting for behaviour
change is the existing social support structure.
Church support groups have been shown to be valuable
in assisting individuals to initiate and maintain
behaviour change.4
