Papyrus mat making was widely practised in Ombeyi natural wetland with the majority, 93.4% of the farmers being involved in commercial production of mats. On average, on a weekly basis, three bundles of dry papyrus were harvested to make 6 mats. This was a considerable reduction in mats production since about 35 mats were made per week over the past 10–15 years as discussed in FGD. The mats were made throughout the year hence, on average, 288 mats were produced annually per farmer and each sold at a price of USD 1.38. Therefore, each farmer generated annual average gross income of USD 397.40 from papyrus mats production.
