Lesson five:
Skill:
● How to be an appreciative audience member.
Introduction:
Divide students into groups of sixes or sevens preferably with equal numbers of boys
and girls. Review connected coral shapes. Within each group, the boys will form
connected coral shapes while the girls slide around the boys. Switch roles
Exploration:
Review story starting from the fish and jelly fish sequence: the fish sliding around and
then pause, the jelly fish sway, sway, sting, sting, sting. The various groups of boys
form connected coral shapes while the girls slide around the boys. Then switch roles.
Next all do a happy fish dance. End with a jump, freeze in a high open shape and sink
quietly to the ground.
Everyone do the whole dance sequence:
● Clam opens slowly and closes slowly (2x), opens slowly and closes fast.
● Clam opens slowly as it grows taller and stretches into a Giant Clam.
● Fish go sliding and sliding all around the coral reef and freeze in a high
shape.
● The jelly fish sway, sway, sting, sting, sting.
● The boys become connected coral shapes. The girl fish slide between and
around the coral.
● The girls take connected coral shapes. The boy fish slide between and around
the coral.
● Everyone do a happy fish dance (skipping and galloping).
● The fish jump out of the water and land quietly.
● Grow into a large open shape (Giant Clam).
● Sink quietly into the ground.
Conclusion:
Get each group to perform while the rest sit down and watch. Emphasize quiet viewing.
Encourage children to clap after each performance to show appreciation.
Have each child draw and write a sentence about how he/she feels about the whole
dance experience. Get them to tell what is important to them.
