Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is the most efficient oilseed crop in the world. One hectare of oil palm plantation produces ten times more oil than other leading oilseed crops [1]. The most efficient producers may achieve yields as high as 8 tonnes of oil per hectare. Among the 10 major oilseeds, oil palm accounted for only 5.5 % of global land use, but con- tributed to 32.0 % of global oils and fats output in 2012. In- donesia and Malaysia produce about 85 % of the world’s palm oil. Other major producer countries include Thailand, Columbia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea and Ecuador. For implementation of appropriate research and developmental strategies, India too could emerge as one of the major pro- ducers of palm oil by cultivating oil palm as an irrigated crop in 2.00 million ha identified as potential area in 18 states and there by producing 7–8 million tonnes of palm oil and 0.7–0.8
