The literature survey of 643 FWS CWs identified as many as150 macrophyte species used worldwide. The most commonly usedplant is Typha spp. with Scirpus (Schoenoplectus) spp., P. australis,Juncus spp. and Eleocharis spp. being the other frequently used plants. The survey also revealed that many FWS CWs are planted with mixture of various species. There is no clean pattern in the use of specific plant species for a certain type of wastewater, only FWS CWs designed for treatment of acid mine drainage are predominantly planted with Typha spp.
