Chinese-owned MG UK is on course to hit the export trail to mainland Europe in left-hand drive markets.

The Longbridge export drive is in the pipeline after MG took orders for 1,000 MG3s in just three months in a £9 million plus sales boom.

The Chinese firm is now poised to broaden its horizons in 2014 with likely initial launches in the Republic of Ireland, Cyprus and Malta, all left-hand drive markets.

The company would then look to expand further into the likes of Scandinavia and Benelux rather than launch in more high-profile markets such as Germany and Italy.

MG UK has not commented in detail publicly on its European plans – but managing director William Wang told the Mail in May 2012 that the Longbridge firm’s aim was to be exporting to Europe within two years.

The firm’s PR and Events manager Doug Wallace said: “We have had a big increase in orders in November and again in December and have taken orders for 1,000 MG3s in the last three months.

“It is a different price bracket to the MG6 model with very low insurance and that attracts quite a lot of younger buyers. If you take out fleet sales, we have had a better year in 2013 for retail sales than 2012.

“We have got 35 UK dealers now and 12 service dealers, where they can carry out authorised repairs. The dealer network is expanding all the time and we are very happy at present with the way the company is heading. But we are still very much a company establishing itself.

“I can confirm we are in discussions with importers from mainland European countries but we are not in a position to reveal any more than that.”

Plans are also still on the drawing board for an MG SUV vehicle, similar in size to the Nissan Qashqai, following considerable interest in the concept MG Icon SUV unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show in 2012. The firm sold a total of 504 cars in the UK in 2013.
