One thing is certain, these practices have
produced a great many men and women who,
while they may be able to utter the words “I
love you,” are not very competent at reinforcing
them with demonstrative acts. A peck on
the cheek is hardly a substitute for those many tactile evidences of love which all of us
require every day of our lives. We shake
hands with people, but with the members of
our own family we enter into more intimate
contact. We embrace, we kiss, we put our
arms around each other. We do not shake
hands with our spouse-we kiss and embrace
and privately unite in the most complete of
all tactile intimacies in sex.
