For sapphire crystals grown by CZ method, the destabilization
of solid–liquid interface results from the gas rejection thus bubbles
distribute randomly in the cross section of ingots. All large size
‘‘bubbles’’ present irregular shape and consist of homogeneous
spherical small bubbles in diameters range from 2 lm to 5lm.
Bubbles density increased with the increasing of pulling rate and
rotation rate. More high pulling rate and rotation rate caused melt
flow more rapidly and more possibility of bubbles will be captured
in line by solid–liquid interface.
For Ti-sapphire crystals grown by CZ method, the destabilization

bubbles distribute in the core of beginning part and end part of
ingots surrounding titanium segregation, and bubbles diameters
are in the 10–45 lm range. With the increasing of bubbles density,
there is no phenomenon of bubbles arrangement in line been
observed, but more bubbles are inclined to be congregated into
various forms. Optical characterization indicated that the bubbles
damage the optical quality of crystals significantly.
