Local utilization of
bio-waste based substrates would reduce the volume of waste,
conserve and recover resources as valuable materials for other purposes,
leading to a zero waste status in bio-waste management.
For this current study, the wearing of vegetation in tourist areas
in Ylläs was studied in July 2013. The surroundings of tourist centers
in Ylläsjärvi area and Äkäslompolo area, parts of hiking trails
and downhill skiing slopes were assessed by visual observation.
It was observed that the environment at the most actively used
trail and areas is heavily or moderately worn, indicating a need
for restoration and revegetation measures. This lead to the suggestion
of alternative scenarios for bio-waste utilization and the
sustainability assessment of their impacts on local communities
