Any reminder we needed that the NHL system is broken and needs to be fixed arrived with word Friday that Washington had traded Robert Lang, the league's leading scorer, to Detroit for draft picks and a prospect. Can anyone imagine, say, Baltimore trading Ray Lewis to Green Bay in December, or San Antonio shipping Tim Duncan to New Jersey at the NBA trade deadline? The league wouldn't allow it. But with the financial state of teams like the Capitals now, the NHL has no choice. All the more reason for the league to stick to its guns when collective bargaining agreement talks get serious this summer.
