The Orphan
Among the many young inmates of Rangoon Central Jail, Maung Chit Tin appeared to be the youngest. He was a quick and alert child and I surmised that he had become so by having had to live on his wits from an early age, having been orphaned when very young. He could not even recall the death of his parents. He was reluctant to tell me his story and broke down and wept. We tried to stop his tears as best as we could and after he had composed himself this was the story that he related.
