A man is sitting by a table and a little man ask him if it's ok to sit down. The little man sits down by the table and there are now two men sitting there. They are watching the American cadets and the English girls in the swimming pool. Suddenly a cadet and an English girl ask to join the table, they also get to sit down. The cadet offers everyone a smoke, some accept, some don't. When he's going to light the smoke between his lips, the little man says: "Dat will not work in dis wind." "Sure it'll work. It always works" the cadet answers. Then a little discussion starts. The little man wants to bet the cadet. If the lighter lights ten times running, the cadet gets the little man's Cadilac. If the lighter doesn't light, the little man gets the cadets little finger on his left hand. At first the cadet doesn't like the bet, but agrees with it after some talk. Then everyone moves inside the little mans hotel room where there is no wind that can do things more difficult for the cadet in his attempt to light his lighter ten times running. The narrator is the referee and the English girl is witness to the bet. After the little man gets the equipment to his room, he starts to prepare for the bet. The cadet has to have his hand tied to a table, so the little man can take his finger as soon as the lighter fails to light. After a while, the lighter has lighted eight times and then the door to the room opens. A little lady comes in and starts to speak to the little man in an unknown language. Later we get to know that the little man is gambling addicted and that the little woman won everything from him a while ago. - Point of view:
