Future Outlook
As the tourism industry in New Zealand burgeons, future ecotourism becomes more crucial for the natural environment’s livelihood. By the year 2013, projections show that the number of yearly visitors to the small island country could reach up to 750,000. In 2007, New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Helen Clark, initiated The New Zealand Tourism Strategy 2015 to insure a green future for the country. The strategy describes Kaitaikitanga and Manaakitanga, meaning “guardianship” and “hospitality” respectively, as the underpinning values behind the initiative. Specifically, the strategy calls for the training of staff in the tourism industry and an improvement of infrastructure.
