A major finding of this research is the absence of official statistical data about credit card
fraud and also “general” fraud, which is needed. There is a lack of official statistical data
available for credit card fraud cases since neither the Statistical Office of the Research,
the Development Unit, nor the CAO seems to maintain such records. In addition, the
OECI and the district CIDs seem not to maintain such records either. It is thus impossible
to measure the extent of the problem of credit card fraud in order to respond adequately
to it (Gee et al., 2009, 2010). If unable to measure fraud the Cyprus police will be unable to
fully assess the extent of fraud, recover assets and arrest those committing fraud
