At Work: Nothing magical about persistence in job hunt
Find ways to connect, remind employers of your existence and reinforce what you purport to be, I said, adding that you should do it with a professional and kind attitude that considers the employer's point of view.
Citing an employer who responds to every job hunter who applied for his job opening, I shared how he heard back from only one job hunter. That job hunter is the one he will keep in mind for the future because he understands the importance of follow-up and building relationships.
Such a responsive employer is the exception, but many value follow-up.
Take Lenore Albert, a lawyer and employer in Orange County, Calif., who wrote me on Facebook: "I consider those who call back and write letters actually interested in working at my office. I expect … candidates to check in periodically. … These are my first hires, over others."
But Gerry wrote to say I must be dreaming — plus, he implied I was, ahem, "old":
"I don't know how old you are, but…(your) most glaring misconception is that employers will even respond to an applicant and then thank them when the posted job is filled by another applicant," Gerry wrote. "E-mails never get a response. Phone calls never returned. … Persistence may pay off in your experience, but in the current world employers just don't care."
His daughter "e-mails her resume and follows up with a phone call" but "rarely is she able to speak directly with the proper person in charge of hiring."
Although I didn't address this in that column but do discuss it regularly, let me just say that the best way to find a job in the current world is to stop e-mailing your resume.
A gazillion other people are doing it. Although it's rude not to acknowledge you, employers are indeed overwhelmed.
Instead, do the hard work that very few job hunters do. Research and target live humans to whom you would like to introduce yourself and with whom you would like to build a relationship.
In my experience — we're talking 2013 now — job hunters that do this, then follow up regularly to remind employers what they can do for them, get noticed.
That brings me to Kevin in Baltimore, who wrote: "I have been politely pestering a company myself. I called every week on Monday. …This went on for a year. …It actually got me an interview. …The plant manager said he admired my persistence."
Kevin will be following up with them.
More jabs about my age came from Aaron: "I'm not sure when you got your job, …maybe in the good ole days. But today, everything is done online. There is no direct (line) to the hiring manager anymore. … Oh, and I love how you describe pestering people via social media. … Are you suggesting that we publicly use Twitter … and ask them if I have the job yet? Or perhaps message them on their personal Facebook account. … I hope … you will address more modern ways to be a pest."
I'm certain I never told anyone to pester people via social media. I did suggest that today job seekers have more ways than ever to position yourself and remind the world you exist using social media strategically.
As for no direct connection between an employer and job hunters, I couldn't disagree more.
Employers seek out the cream of the crop on discussion boards and LinkedIn where a person is sharing a thoughtful insight. They hear that person speak at a professional meeting or ask great questions from the audience.
They meet job hunters who find them because those job hunters did the hard work.
Yes, back in the good ol' days, persistence paid off. In modern times it still does — even more so because people are so busy and will forget about you more easily.
What's changed is the variety of vehicles by which to persist.
