Head of the Ohigashi-san branch of Buddhism, Higashi-Hongan-ji Temple is well known for its massive entrance gate, one of the three largest in Kyoto.
The Founder’s Hall, the one enshrining the wooden figure of Shinran Shonin, the founder of the branch, is the biggest wooden structure in the world, with its floor covered by more than 900 tatamis. Another Hall is dedicated to Amida Buddha. The garden is separated from the temple complex and is full of different types of flowers and orange trees.
