the Supreme Court of India banned the overloading of trucks. As always, people have managed to carry on as before by finding legal loopholes in this significant ruling. The blanket ban has undoubtedly brought down the number of traffic accidents but even so, the sight of a truck bursting its seams is far too common on the Indian highway. Some states found a way around the crackdown by allowing overloaded vehicles to ply its road as long as they paid a fine. In 2013, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was allowed to penalise trucks. With India being ‘honoured’ with the dubious distinction of the most road accidents in the world, no move aimed at reducing the number of road fatalities will be stringent enough.
