Statistical analyses
The mean number of individual species per quadrat was calculated. Relative
density of each species based on the total number of individuals of all species
on each plantation was calculated as described by Ramsay and deLeeuw
[1964], where relative density of species 'A' is given as:
Number of individuals of species 'A' x 100
Total number of individual of all species

Species densities and relative densities in the plantations were compared
with those of their associated fallow reserve savanna lands by means oft-test
[Zar, 1974].
Results and discussion
Table 1 shows the variation in light intensities reaching the floors of the
plantations as compared with that in the open. Table 2 shows the botanical
compositions of fodder and non-fodder species within and outside the
