The most characteristic symptoms of the dahlia mosaic disease include mosaic, vein-banding systemic chlorosis, stunting, and leaf distortion. Symptoms vary depending on the cultivar, and cultivars with few or no symptoms are common (Fig. 1). The dsDNA genome of DMV-D10 was cloned and sequenced. It consists of 7046 bp and its genome organization is typical of the members of the genus Caulimovirus with a few exceptions ( Fig. 2a). The open reading frame (ORF) II in members of the genus Caulimovirus codes for an aphid transmission factor which is not present in the genome of DMV-D10 ( Pahalawatta et al., 2008). Another notable divergence from the typical caulimovirus genome organization is that DMV-D10 has a truncated coat protein ( Fig. 2a). Phylogenetic analyses of the DMV-D10 ORFs showed that it is a distinct species within the Caulimovirus genus ( Fig. 2b).
