Learning Design
Design is an integral part of the process of planning for learning, thus crucial to educators’
teaching practices (Atkin 1996, 2007; Wiggins and McTighe 2008). Learning design is a
contested term and the field is generally defined by two positions. The first, Learning Design,
can encapsulate the technical design of online learning environments. The second, learning
design, is the design process undertaken by educators when planning and sequencing learning
activities and creating a visual, textual or multimodal product which represents practice, enabling
teachers to share ideas about innovative pedagogy and reflect on their design process (Aghostino
et al. 2011; Atkin 2007; Kalantzis and Cope 2011). This paper explores the latter position
regarding learning design.
