In 2002, around 3rd February to 7th April, Tourism Authority of Thailand had organizeda special project at Tha Phae Gate to Upakut road about 950 meters. This project was called “Khuncheewithaichumchonkhunthanonhai khon durn” (คืนชีวิตให้ชุมชน คืนถนนให้คนเดิน) by it had the concept about traditions, lifestyle and beauty of Lanna culture. It was arranged every Sunday, for a total of 10 times. So, the name of this activity was “the 10 miracles of Lanna at Tha Phae since 09.00 - 24.00 hrs.” In event would show about art, beauty of life and customs of Lanna culture for attract the foreigner tourists and the general public.
When the last day of the event arrived, feedback of activity was excellent. Chiang Mai people regretted and wanted to arrange this activity continually. Eventually, Chiang Mai municipality decided to hold this activity continually by it would be arranged every Sunday.After the activity had been held for a while, Chiang Mai municipality wanted to move the utility on this roaddown underground. It made this event wasmoved from Tha Phae road to Ratchadamnoen road since August 31st, 2004. The length of distance was about 1.50 kilometer. Moreover, therewere arranging performances at court area of Three Kings Monument.When this Sunday walking street became popular tourist place,it made alot of new Pedestrian Street in new place happen such as Wualai Saturday Night market, Sankampaeng Walking Street and others which stilledhas the concept of Lanna culture tradition.
In the present, Tha Phae walking street or Sunday walking street was expanded and had become the largest pedestrian street of Chiang Mai already. The official time was open 17.00 am.-22.00 pm, located on Ratchadamnoen road and Phrapokklao road. It situated in the Central of Chiang Mai city which surrounded by moat. It started from Tha Phae gate to Wat Phra Singh. Along the way, there would be Phrapokklao road cut a crossat the intersection of Klang Wiang. On the way, tourists could explore the goods and purchase its. There were also performances from students, independent artists who show their talent for tourists. A lot of vendors sold several unusual products, Local food like KhaoJee( Grilled sticky rice with egg) or khaotan (Candy Rice Crackers). There werealso various temples on the side of road, tourists could visit to worship. Moreover, committee who managed administration of event would arrange many interesting activities to suitable for season, festivals, tradition and culture of Chiang Mai.
