In my opinion, Ivan is respectable because he can goes through his selfish in his life. This makes him respectable because his selfish is a general problem for everybody. Like in the story, Ivan is a middle class man, always had enough to get by and a little to treat himself. So when the possibility of him winning the money, he can snatch the lottery from his wife and keep it only himself but he didn’t do it. For example in the paragraph “"And if we have won," he said--"why, it will be a new life, it will be a transformation! The ticket is yours, but if it were mine I should, first of all, of course, spend twenty-five thousand on real property in the shape of an estate; ten thousand on immediate expenses, new furnishing . . . travelling . . . paying debts, and so on. . . . The other forty thousand I would put in the bank and get interest on it."” This paragraph show that he know the ticket is his wife not him and instead of snatch the lottery from his wife when it winning the money, but he suggest his wife that how to pay the money when it winning the money. So I think that he is a respectable person.
