The City Council consists of one mayor and seven councilmembers, elected by the citizens of the City of Ketchikan. The vice mayor is selected to serve a one-year term from among the councilmembers shortly after the election. Municipal elections are held the first Tuesday of each October and each councilmember elected serves a three-year term. The Council meets for regularly scheduled meetings every first and third Thursday of each month.
The City Council is interested in the public’s opinion on issues. A member of the public can write to the Council at the following address: 334 Front Street, Ketchikan, Alaska 99901, or deliver written correspondence to the same address. E-mail may be sent (click on the “Contact” link in the left window pane on this page). Any item requesting Council action must be delivered to the Clerk’s office by Wednesday of the week before the scheduled Council meeting.
October 2016 - The City Council is seeking to fill a vacancy for the position of Councilmember. Applications are available at the City Clerk’s Office, 334 Front Street, Ketchikan, Alaska 99901. All applications must be received in the City Clerk’s office not later than 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 21, 2016. Applicants must be qualified voters of the City of Ketchikan and must have been City residents for at least one year.
The City Council will determine which applicants to interview from applications received. The interviews and vote to fill the vacancy shall be open to the public. The Council may either fill the vacancy with the applicants who, from among those interviewed by the Council, are, in the Council’s sole determination, the most qualified or, the Council may direct re-publication of the vacancies. The term of the appointment to fill the vacant position will be until the next regular municipal election, which will be held on October 3, 2017.
