6. Conclusions
Human resource management is one of the most vibrant areas of research into
hospitality and it would be an unusual copy of a hospitality journal which did not
carry at least one article in this area. The work which is published in the specialist
journals increasingly demonstrates a strong understanding of and draws on the
relevant mainstream literature. However, what authors are primarily doing is to take
ideas and concepts which have been developed in the mainstream literature and
applying them to the hospitality context. There is little evidence as yet of influence in
the other direction. Although, hospitality researchers are increasingly publishing in
mainstream journals their work is rarely cited by mainstream researchers. Little of the
research into hospitality makes its way into mainstream literature and that which
does is often produced by researchers who are not based in hospitality departments.
