QI Project on Clinical Units
Additional evidence was sought by conducting a QI project in two hospital clinical sites chosen for their unique patient populations. The sites represented the greatest number of children with CI experiencing either episodic (potentially intermittent episodes of painful experiences) or acute pain that would provide an opportunity to test the clinical utility of both tools in practice. The sites included the postsurgical/ trauma unit and an inpatient rehabilitation unit. The postsurgical/trauma unit cared for patients with acute postoperative pain, and the rehabilitation unit cared for children often recovering from traumatic injury or surgery requiring intensive therapies that often expose the child to pain as they work to regain lost mobility and strength.
