A THAI trader fatally shot yesterday by a Burmese soldier on the border in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai, border officials said.
Tawee Kamtantee, 38, was shot through the chest and died on the way to hospital. He had reportedly crossed the border to sell his produce, and a Burmese soldier allegedly thinking he was Burmese asked to search him.
Tawee, thinking he could be arrested, tried to flee back to Thailand but was shot while crossing the Mae Sai River.
Chiang Rai Governor Kamron Booncher said he had received a report on the killing, but had yet to determine what business Tawee was doing or if the Burmese soldier had overreacted to the situation
