The commercial production of certain algae culture (the
agrarian process of growing and harvesting algae for its many
byproducts) has the potential of providing a large proportion
of the nation's transportation fuel needs without significantly
reducing the amount of arable land currently used for agriculture.
However, the development of algae culture in the
United States has lagged significantly due to the misconception
that algae cannot be grown in sufficient quantities to be
economic due to meteorology conditions, or the high cost of
production which currently plague the industry. This condition
requires a new paradigm in order to reduce the cost of
algae production as well as be capable of producing algae
under real world conditions found in the US.
