An important town of Khmer age, Phimai is still the home of elegant temples of varying sizes. Most of the temples, dating back a thousands years, are supposed to be built by the people of Brahmanic culture. They are made of brick and sandstone. The site also has marks of Buddhism, which dates back in the area to the 7th century.
Phimai also hosts one of the most spectacular Khmer temples in Thailand. The grand temple in the historical complex is compared by the archaeologists to Angkor Wat. Most buildings within the historical park are from the 11th to the 12th century, built in the Bayon, Baphuon and Angkor Wat style.
