This may be partially
explained by the relatively low numbers of animal sused
in the present study. Indeed , in experiment 2 the mortality
rate was 0% for all weaning ages. Never thel ess, the results
of experiment 1 support previous findings( Cabreraetal.,
2010; Main etal.,2004; Smith etal.,2008) that the risk of
mortality increases at younger weaning ages. This is an
important consideration for commercial pig producers
because, while the mortality rate may not affect individual
pig performance,it will affect the performance of the
group as a whole and out put per sow.
