The decomposition of a system into subsystems is a central
part of the hierarchization and modularization approach.
Accordingly there is a strong focus both in literature and
practice on the decomposition and creation of modules.
During the broad examination of decomposition approaches, a
commonly used ‘functional based’ decomposition has been
established and widely accepted both in theory and practice
[5][6][25][26][27].
As integration of physical modules has evolved mainly
from product driven modularization programs, the integration
of these modules is mainly regarded under a plug and play
viewpoint [25][26].
For cross-cutting topics (e.g. power and fluid supply,
overall control system) an additional step of integration is
needed. This means an integration of different modules/
subsystems in one or more engineering discipline (e.g. the
lightning protection of a substation requires the expertise of
civil and electrical engineering) to ensure overall system
functionality.
